Meme Talks

INTERNET CULTURE

Memes are like genes which have intrinsic properties that get passed on from one generation to the next, but through a non-biological process. Nonetheless, the process of propagating memes affects biological evolution. Therefore, we’re in deep trouble.

2026 - 2027 SCHEDULE

Full Description

Meme Talks blends humor, science, and cultural analysis into a fast-paced, accessible talk packed with slides to explicate how memes operate across human culture. Moving through a wide range of examples, from Hunter-gatherer to the Information Age, a clear insight begins to emerge: despite their apparent variety, memes tend to follow a surprisingly small number of recurring patterns.

How does culture evolve? How does culture affect biology? Why are memes one of the most powerful forces shaping the modern world?

Presented in-person by Andrew Baron, creator of Rocketboom and Know Your Meme.

Girl with a Pearl Earring (Selfie Iteration) 2026

What might seem like a burden, having to constantly update classic works with the latest technology, happens on its own, as people around the world remake it again and again. They don’t coordinate or get paid; they just can’t help themselves, becoming carriers of a meme that persists through repeated imitation, within a larger process of cultural selection.
